The Bator Art Gallery in Sopot, a charming seaside resort in Pomerelia on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, hosted a remarkable event featuring the McNulty Fortepiano Pleyel. This instrument, crafted by Paul McNulty and Sergei Kramer (McNulty’s successor), was presented on stage in an exceptional performance by Naruhiko Kawaguchi and soprano Aldona Bartnik.
On August 8, 2024, Eric Guo, the acclaimed winner of the Frederic Chopin Competition on Period Instruments, delivered a captivating recital at the Duszniki-Zdrój International Chopin Festival in southwestern Poland. Performing on a McNulty fortepiano Pleyel, — a meticulous replica of Chopin’s favored instrument — Guo honored Chopin’s legacy with extraordinary authenticity and depth.
On Monday, June 3rd, acclaimed pianist Angela Hewitt made her historic fortepiano debut at Wigmore Hall. The eagerly awaited concert featured works by Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Beethoven. Hewitt performed on a replica Graf fortepiano, expertly crafted by Paul McNulty and Sergei Kramer, adding to the event’s significance for both the venue and the audience.
The recent release of Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 23, performed by Olga Pashchenko and the ensemble Il Gardellino on a McNulty fortepiano Walter, has sparked excitement among classical music enthusiasts. This collaboration builds upon their previous work on Alpha 726, featuring Piano Concertos Nos. 9 and 17. What sets this release apart is not only the selection of concertos but also the exceptional quality of the performance and the instruments employed.
The intimate hall setting was carefully prepared to highlight the beautiful sound and the pianist’s passion for period instruments. The Pleyel, renowned for its unique historical significance, underwent meticulously preparation by Paul McNulty and Sergei Kramer for the event, ensuring that every note resonated with authenticity and precision.
The program is presented on two modern copies of most famous fortepiano makers of Chopin‘s time: C. Graf, 1819 and I.Pleyel, 1830. The Graf was preferred by Chopin when he first performed in Vienna.
Beethoven’s piano works are deeply connected to the instruments on which they were written. He lived in a period in which piano making developed rapidly in a rapidly changing society and Beethoven’s own style evolved accordingly. His works are perfectly expressive of the sounds and effects of his different pianos, using their possibilities to the full.
Premier recording of “complete Beethoven sonatas” played by Alexei Lubimov and his colleagues is recorded on copies of instruments from Beethoven’s era, built by the outstanding contemporary piano master Paul McNulty.
